Start with one real task
A prompt is the instruction you give an AI tool. Start with something small you can check yourself: drafting a meeting agenda, explaining an unfamiliar idea, or organizing a list. You do not need special phrases or a technical background.
Give it something to work with
Instead of ‘help me write an email,’ try: ‘Draft a friendly email inviting my book club to meet on Saturday at 2 pm. Keep it under 100 words. Leave the location as [location].’ The task is clear, the context is useful, and the missing fact stays missing.
Specify what a good answer looks like
Ask for the format you need: a short email, a table, three options, or a step-by-step explanation. Add constraints such as length and tone. If there are important gaps, ask the tool to list questions before drafting.
Review before you use it
AI can produce confident mistakes. Check names, dates, claims, calculations, and tone. Use invented details for practice, and avoid putting confidential or personal information into a tool unless you understand its data settings and have permission.
